$10,894,301,881,194.62 and counting.
That's what the U.S. National Debt is as of March 2nd, 2009 at 01:02:20 PM GMT. And it is increasing at a rate of $3.62 billion per day. The estimated population of the United States is 305,741,216 so each citizen's share of this debt is $35,632.43.
This is staggering. To most people today, this number is incomprehensible. The word "trillion" is just thrown around without ever grasping the sheer volume of what the amount really is.
To top it all off, the U.S. national debt is growing by $500 billion per year. GROWING! And that doesn't even take into account the billions in handouts the government just approved. And the current administration is planning on spending another $3.55 trillion?
This is insane! It has got to stop! I don't care who started it. I don't care who has spent more. I don't care which political party can sling more mud and blame the other. Democraps...Republicants...it doesn't matter. I hold them all responsible for these staggering numbers.
Washington needs and enema. It's time to impeach Congress.

The fact that people are just living their own American dream instead of contemplating the national debt or complaining about it is part of the problem. I agree with Eric. It's time for us to stop adding to the debt. Neither party should be adding to it if they can help it.
As far as not adding to the debt - well, I'm all for it, but can someone please tell me how we do that NOW? Like, right NOW! This country needs people to spend, corporations need to retain workers, not lay them off - do that at the expense of executive salaries and bonuses, if necessary. People should be damn glad of the country we have, and work to save it.
Regardless of whether you liked the outcome of the election last November, the good part was that the stranglehold the 55+ age group had on politics in this country was finally eased (not broken). People who care about the debt to our children need to vote more, and in EVERY election, not just the presidential. AND we have to follow up on our promise not to pass this debt off to our children. Think we can commit to that?
